Maura and Betsy Miller

Our gorgeous Maura gin label, created by the amazingly talented Hope Blamire Artist, celebrates the incredible contributions women have made to the history of Scotland. The label is full of amazing stories of Scottish women in history. One remarkable woman, Scotland's pioneering female ship captain, was Betsy Miller of Saltcoats (1792-1864). With the death of her brother and a bed-ridden father, Betsy and her sister Hannah defied gender stereotypes by taking over the family shipping business, sailing between Saltcoats and Ireland for 3 decades on the ship, the Clytus, carrying mostly coal to the Irish ports, then limestone back to Ardrossan.
